Web cast
- streaming
Without a doubt the most interesting development in the use of the web for events is the web cast. The first point that should be emphasised is that it is not like a broadcast. It is not broad i.e. the number of people who can watch the event via their computer is very limited. This constraint is only one of many. The picture quality is also very limited. However each of these areas is being improved on a daily basis. At present these constraints relate to the concept of the bandwidth - that is the amount of information (data) which can travel from one computer to another over a set period of time.
Audio streaming (i.e. without the picture) on the other hand does not require such large bandwidth. This means that music events- concerts, speeches and small recitals - can use current technology to enhance their events.
At a recent seminar, Mark
Muggeridge from the company STREAMWORKS gave a presentation on what the event
manager needs to know when dealing with the web caster.
