One of 8 similar cranes the other class members being: 1051 1066 1067 1068 1069 1082 1083 Unlike the earlier crane locomotives which lifted my means of a winch, these locomotives are luffing cranes which lift by raising the long (21' 9'') jib by means of a steam cylinder. The jib can also be rotated under power. Interesting features of this class are the hole through the jib to permit the smoke to escape when the jib is in the full forward position, and the sloping top to the steam chests. Some of these cranes were fitted with turbo generators for use with electromagnets for lifting scrap, 1052 is not now fitted with a turbo generator, whether it ever had one or not is unknown.

1052 finished her service with the railways at Civic Workshops when her jib was damaged in the mid seventies. I remember seeing it the day the damage happened, the jib was hanging down almost touching the ground. 1052 was towed to Cardiff workshops where its jib was replaced with that of 1068. It saw no further service with the railways but was sold to the Dorrigo Steam Railway and museum, then located at Rhonda Colliary. This group used 1052 on a number of occassions to load wheel sets and other spares into wagons prior to the move to Dorrigo. One other interesting job it had there was (together with Juno) to haul 6039 from Rhonda to Cockle Creek prior to the Silver Jubilee tours. 1052 remains in excellent condition and could be easily returned to working order.
