Ordered in the early 1860's for use on the main lines to Goulburn and Bathurst then under construction, the E17 class saw extensive use on main lines freight services till 1889 when withdrawals commenced. A number were sold to private operators, one of which survived (E18) for preservation.
1002 was sold to the Public Works Department in December 1899 but returned to railway ownership in 1917. 1002 was condemned in July 1929.
Oberg page 24 has a photo of 1002 in original condition.
Locomotives of NSW page 68 shows a photo of either 1002 or 1003 being first locomotive to through Wallarobba tunnel arount 1910.
