Courses
On this page, I give general descriptions of the some of the courses I have taught at the Sydney Conservatorium in the last couple of years - more formal descriptions of those to be offered in 1999 can be found in the on-line version of the Conservatorium Handbook. Various forms of PG supervision (Masters, Ph.D) are not addressed here.
Lectures Music History 5 (UG) deals with Western Art Music from c. 1895 to the late 1940s; that is, it begins with the generation of composers born in the 1860s (Mahler, Debussy, R. Strauss), and ends with early works by composers such as Messiaen and Cage. Music History 6 (UG) begins with the post-war avant-gardes in Europe and the USA, and ends as close as possible to the present day - several examples in the final couple of lectures come from the mid-nineties (Carter, Ferneyhough, PŠrt, Reich, Stockhausen, and younger composers).
Seminars/Electives Contemporary Studies 1/2 (UG) [New in 1998] concentrates on Western Art Music from the 1970s onwards. The first semester examines the range of current stylistic trends within various countries (France, Germany, Italy, UK, USA etc.), while the second semester analyses individual works (Andriessen, Barrett, Boulez et al.). Late Beethoven (UG) examines aesthetic, analytical and historical issues in Beethoven's work from Op. 101 onwards. Musicology Workshop (UG/PG), given in collaboration with Dr. Kathleen Nelson, serves as weekly forum for undergraduate Musicology Majors, post-graduate students and staff to discuss current issues in musicology, and to present work in progress. 20th-Century Sketch Studies (PG) [New in 1998] takes sketch facsimilies by many leading 20th-century composers (Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Webern, Stockhausen, Ferneyhough, Kagel) as a basis for examining the creative process, and the varying natures and problematics of contemporary sketch materials.
